  • College has ended and the holiday has started. I spent the last months between books and lectures. It is now time to spend the upcoming months in the bliss of freedom!

With some classmates, I’ve arranged a trip to southern Egypt, where the cities of Luxor and Aswan are located. We want to take a break from the toil of studying and forget about college, assignments, exams and some professors! We will visit some of the Pharaonic temples there.

Our classmate, Qāsim, will come with us. He is a student at the faculty of arts, department of history, and he also works as a tour guide with a tour company in Cairo. Qasim has a wide knowledge of ancient Egyptian history and I know that he has recently begun to take an interest in Greek history.

Also coming with us is Sālim, who is talented in drawing. He loves to draw buildings such as towers and mosques. He won the university painting award for his portrait of the Sultan Hassan mosque. He always focuses on small details in his paintings.

One of the professors is coming with us as well. He is originally from Aswan, from one of the Nubian tribes there.

Nubians are well-known for their beautiful culture, immense politeness, and hospitality, and they are similarly well-known for their colorful clothing, nice dancing and wonderful singing.

Many Egyptian singers have emerged from Nubia. The music professor, Ḥamza ʿAlāʾ al-Dīn, who was skilled in the Oud, was also from Nubia. Professor Ḥamza ʿAlāʾ al-Dīn was born in Nubia and studied Nubian music then traveled and studied in Italy, America, and Japan until he became a music professor in America and lived in California until he died. May God have mercy upon him.

God willing, we will set off by bus, at seven in the morning. I am very excited.
